SMF's hourly lot closes for work on new 5,500-spot parking garage
SACRAMENTO – It's a day many have been waiting for, especially if you are always waiting to find a parking spot when flying out of Sacramento International Airport.
The groundbreaking ceremony for Terminal B's new parking garage is happening Wednesday.
It's a feature designed to enhance passenger experience and improve airport infrastructure. The new garage will add 5,500 close-in parking spaces and feature EV charging, parking guidance, reservations, and public art pieces.
The work is part of a $1.3 billion expansion project for the airport. SMF broke ground for a new pedestrian walkway in August.
To make room for the new garage, the hourly lot will be closing – meaning 700 spaces will be gone, but airport officials say the long-term will be better.
The six-level parking structure will take 18 months to two years to build.
Another 3,000-spot parking lot to the south side of the airport is also getting ready to open.
