Sacramento Fire Station One Of The Busiest In The Nation

SACRAMENTO -- It's been called the busiest fire station in Sacramento, and one of the busiest in the nation.

The fire engines of Fire Station No. 6 average 6,000 calls a year.

Crews are now bracing for a flood of service calls ahead of the Fourth of July celebration.

"This is the day in the life of the firehouse, somebody's gotta step up and cook."

That's how most afternoons begin for Fire Station No. 6, in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood.

But, the Fourth of July is anything but typical for the firehouse.

"The call volume increase is so fast in a short amount of time that we are running from call, to call, to call," said Captain Dave Lauchner.

Captain Lauchner says he expects his crews to get called out to more grass fires and house fires, and says their calls for service double on the Fourth of July.

Lauchner added the heat, coupled with people setting off fireworks, could create dangerous conditions to start a grass fire.

Firehouse 6 was busy with medical calls Monday afternoon – a much-needed break from the house fire they knocked down on Sunday night off East Nichols Avenue.

"I don't expect crews to sit down for very long tonight", said Captain Lauchner.

Firehouse six expects to get over 50 service calls for the Fourth of July – that's twice as many calls as they would normally get on any other day.
