Sacramento County Officials Concerned About Spike In Hash Oil Explosions
SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — Homemade hash oil is becoming a growing concern as the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office says it's already prosecuted more than a dozen cases this year.
The vapors from butane hash oil are extremely flammable and can be ignited by a simple light switch or even static electricity.
An explosion of the highly concentrated form of THC happened at a Rancho Cordova apartment complex.
"I was in the shower, actually and I just ran out," said resident Celia Zambrano. "I literally thought it was in my house. It was so loud."
The DA's office has seen a spike in the explosions across the county.
The January incident sent two people to the hospital and left nearly 150 people homeless. Zambrano said she saw one person presumably caught in the blast on the grass on fire.
Two children under the age of 6 escaped another blast in the Arden-Arcade area, but their pet dog wasn't so lucky.
The DA's office believes the reason hash oil has become so popular is partly because of the legalization of medical marijuana.
