Fiery crash near Sacramento leaves 1 driver dead

1 dead, 1 injured in fiery crash near Sacramento

SACRAMENTO COUNTY – One person has died after a two-vehicle crash on Excelsior Road near Sacramento Thursday morning.

Metro Fire of Sacramento crews responded to the scene near Excelsior Road and Kiefer Boulevard.

The California Highway Patrol said the driver of a Tesla tried to pass multiple vehicles but crashed head-on with the driver of a Ford Fusion traveling the opposite way.

The Tesla then caught fire while the Fusion overturned, officers said. 

The driver of the Tesla was pronounced dead while the driver of the Fusion sustained major injuries, the CHP said.

Both lanes of Excelsior Road were blocked due to the crash for several hours. 

The Tesla driver, who the CHP said was a woman, has not been identified.
