Sacramento County deputies arrest over 50 people in holiday retail theft operation

SACRAMENTO – More than 50 people were arrested last week during an undercover retail theft operation at over a dozen Sacramento County businesses.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said Operation Ugly Sweater targeted retail theft after the passage of Proposition 36

It supported more than 15 businesses by conducting an undercover retail theft operation, leading to more than 50 arrests, including seven of the nine felonies coming from the passage of Proposition 36, deputies said.

Three illegal handguns and drugs for sale were also recovered during the operation, deputies said. 

A father and his 14-year-old son are accused of stealing several hundred collectible cards, deputies said. Another man was also arrested for starting a fire in front of a store. 

Deputies also used the operation to educate loss prevention teams at the stores and provide resources.
