Sacramento Company's App At Heart Of Super Fan Chase Event

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS13) — A Super Bowl-themed event with an Amazing Race vibe is using a Sacramento startup as the online vehicle driving the competition.

The scavenger hunt will take teams of football fans through the Bay Area over four days, starting next week. Two-member teams will tackle clues at 50 different Bay Area venues over four days for a chance at a Super Bowl price.

"The team with the most stamps will win a VIP viewing experience of the Super Bowl," said Alesia Harris.

The Super Fan Chase is modeled after the CBS hit reality show "The Amazing Race," and Sacramento's WimZr app is a key player in elevating the competition.

"We'll have a lot of different scenarios and pop up celebrities throughout the event as well to have Q&A's and give out clues," said WimZr president John Parila.

The social-media app connects people at festivals, conferences, concerts and other big events. The information feed is an open forum that can help users navigate crowds, get tips and alerts on where to explore and upgrade their overall experience.

"You might say, 'Hey, I want to go grab a couple of beers at this bar before the game' or 'We know that this event is going on,' so we can really kind of connect and be able to socially activate the entire event before, during and after the event," he said.

The app is free, and the hope is the exposure from the Super Bowl will lead to more growth.

"We see the potential of where it's going to go but at the same time you're pinching yourself because now it's not a theory, it's becoming a reality. You're seeing the momentum, you're seeing people talk about it," he said.

Part of the company's allure was its capital city roots. Harris, the co-owner of the chase, is a Sacramento native. She's confident the race, coupled with the app will be a winning combination for local football fans.

"Most of the events that you're seeing pop up around the Super Bowl are very expensive. And so, we made our event affordable because we want to appeal to those die hard fans who want to experience the Super Bowl in a fun, unique way," she said.

The Super Fan Chase starts Feb. 3 at Kabam Field at UC Berkeley. Tickets are $75.
