Sacramento City Manager John Shirey Leaving Position In November

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Sacramento City Manager John Shirey will not seek a contract extension beyond this year.

Members of the city council and Mayor Kevin Johnson joined Shirey as he announced Tuesday that he will leave the position after serving out the remainder of his contract.

"It has been an honor and pleasure to serve the City of Sacramento for the past five years and I have enjoyed working with supportive City Councils during my tenure," City Manager John Shirey said in a statement. "I am proud of the work we did to move the City forward and I feel strongly that the City is well positioned for the future. I am committed to making sure there is a smooth transition within City Hall as I begin to look forward to the next chapter of my career."

Shirey was hired to the position in September, 2011. He oversees the city's approximately $947 million operating budget and 4,300-employee workforce.

His term runs out on November 18.

The city council says it will reveal details about its search for Shirey's replacement in the coming weeks.
