Sac State Hornets, UC Davis Aggies to face off in 70th Causeway Classic on KMAX31

Sacramento State announces Causeway Classic partnership with Wilton Rancheria

SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento State Hornets will host the UC Davis Aggies for the 70th Causeway Classic on Saturday.

Though this is being billed as the 70th Causeway Classic, this will actually be the 71st all-time meeting between the two college football teams. They also faced each other in the 1988 postseason.

UC Davis leads the all-time record 47-23.

In last year's matchup, UC Davis beat Sac State 31-21 after the Hornets had won three straight Causeway Classics.

Why is it called the Causeway Classic?

The Aggies and Hornets have faced each other annually since 1954, though the game hadn't started being called the Causeway Classic since the early 1980s.

The name refers to the Yolo Causeway, a stretch of Interstate 80 that connects the cities of Davis and Sacramento.

What's on the line?

Both teams play in the Big Sky Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

UC Davis ranks No. 5 in the FCS and No. 2 in the Big Sky with an overall record of 9-2. The Aggies are 5-1 in conference play.

Though UC Davis is a lock for the FCS playoffs, the Hornets will be looking to spoil the Aggies' chances at earning a share of the Big Sky championship. UC Davis needs a win over Sacramento and a Montana State loss to earn their share of the title.

Sacramento State sits with a 3-8 record in the FCS and 1-6 in conference play. On Friday, Sky River Casino announced that it had signed on as an official partner of Sacramento State Athletics. A special recognition highlighting the university's recently unveiled Native American College will be held during Saturday's game.

The Causeway Classic trophy is also on the line. The trophy is made from concrete taken from the Yolo Causeway.

Where to watch the Causeway Classic

You can watch the 70th Causeway Classic on KMAX31 and ESPN+. A radio broadcast of the game will also be featured on ESPN 1320.

The games are held at both campuses, but this year's matchup is at Hornet Stadium. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
