WATCH: Roseville police release body cam video of April deadly shootout at Mahany Park

Digging into the Roseville active shooting body cam footage

ROSEVILLE — Body cam footage was released Thursday of an early April shooting in Roseville involving a suspect who took two hostages, killing one at Mahany Park.

The newly released records include dispatch audio of when shots were fired by the suspect and responding Roseville police officers as well as the officers' body cameras. The videos show officers in full tactical gear taking aim at their suspect, who is not seen.

The Roseville Police Department only released the gunshots they describe as the "critical incidents" within this criminal event. The video never shows officers confronting or arresting their suspect, Eric Abril.

It all happened on April 6. Roseville police say Abril initially fired at a California Highway Patrol officer who was seeking to serve him a search warrant, then continued firing at responding officers while taking Roseville husband and wife James and Patricia MacEgan hostage and shooting them. James MacEgan died at the scene.

Officers exchanged gunfire from a long distance with Abril between 12:38 p.m. and 12:57 p.m. Abril also shot a CHP officer and was shot once in the left arm.

The police department said none of the CHP officers at the scene had body-worn cameras, which the CHP also confirmed.

Abril was arraigned in mid-April on four charges for the incident, including:

  • One count of attempted murder of a peace officer.
  • One count of murder.
  • One count of aggravated kidnapping causing bodily harm or death.
  • One count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
