Police Recapture Burglary Suspect Who Stole Officer's Car While In Custody

SUNSET, Utah (AP) - Police say they've captured a burglary suspect who stole an officer's vehicle while he was in custody.

Sunset Police Chief Ken Eborn says 26-year-old Nathan Ward was first arrested about 1 p.m. Sunday on suspicion of burglary, but escaped on foot while his hands were cuffed behind his back.

Eborn says Ward was caught and placed in an unmarked police vehicle.

Authorities say Ward's second escape happened when he convinced the officer to stop by his house so he could tell his mom he was going to jail.

Eborn says that while the officer went to the house, Ward shimmied his hands from behind his back, jumped in the front seat and drove off.

Officials say the SUV was found abandoned in Ogden, and Ward was recaptured about 6 p.m.
