Suspect In Loomis Shootout With Deputies Wanted On Drug Charges In Fresno

LOOMIS (CBS13) - A suspect was shot after exchanging gunfire with Placer County Sheriff's Department deputies Monday morning.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. at a shopping center in the 6100 block of Horseshoe Bar Road in Loomis that also houses a sheriff's department substation.

It incident began across the street from the substation in the parking lot of Raley's. Someone called 911, reporting a domestic incident between a man and a woman and saying the man was waving a gun. A deputy went to the parking lot and talked the woman first and then the man, who reportedly got out of the car, ran across Horseshoe Bar Road and shot at the deputy, according to a statement from the Placer County Sheriff's Department.

The deputy shot back at the suspect who then ran into a neighborhood and later circled back toward the road, ending up at the Placer County Sheriff's Department substation. There, he was met by two deputies who reportedly exchanged gunfire with him and injured him.

A woman who was sitting in a car when the incident happened told CBS13, "I just heard the officer talking and then we heard the gunshots and then we pulled over, so we caught it, like, right when it happened."

She said she witnessed the suspect being shot then falling to the ground.

"He fell after the first couple of gunshots. We heard the officer saying, 'put the gun down' and then we heard the gunshots and then we saw him drop to the floor," she said.  "I just couldn't believe that this stuff would happen in Loomis, it's shocking."

Authorities have identified the suspect as Rodney J. Hance, 49, of Fresno. He is listed in serious condition at Roseville Sutter Medical Center. He was wanted on felony drug charges in Fresno.

No deputies were injured during incident

An employee of Mail Biz Etc., a business in the same building as the sheriff's department substation, says they saw someone run toward the Placer County Sheriff's Department substation and patrol cars drive up, then heard what sounded like gunshots.
