One Final Beer: UC Davis Students Compete For Iron Brew Title

DAVIS (CBS13) — A group of UC Davis students turned in beer for their final and it won them top honors.

Four students from UC Davis' Food and Science Technology Department gathered at Sudwerk Brewing Co. in Davis to sample their school work.

It's the second year the school and brewery held the competition for the Iron Brew title. Forty students all part of the program worked all semester to come up with the perfect beer to be judged.

Evann Dufort was part of the team of four that won.

"The tweaking of the recipe is basically trying out different types of malts, different mashing conditions, different types of hops," he said.

Trent Yackzan of Sudwerk helped judge the students' work.

"It's competitive, and these students really look forward to it," he said.

In the end, they chose The Class Is In Session IPA, created in what looks like a lab setting on campus.

The IPA will be featured around Davis and debut on Thursday night at Sudwerk. Part of the sales will go back to the food and technology department.
