Suspect Escapes From CHP Patrol Car In West Sacramento
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Police arrested a suspect who managed to escape from a CHP vehicle on Highway 50.
Around 7 p.m. Wednesday, a CHP officer was driving westbound on Highway 50 and ran a check on the license place of a 1996 Ford Explorer. The computer alerted the officer that the SUV was reported stolen. The driver of the SUV, identified as Charles Ames, pulled over, and the CHP officer pulled in front of the stolen vehicle, according to a statement from the CHP.
As the officer was leaving their vehicle, Ames allegedly attempted to pull forward. The officer drew their gun and Ames stopped. He was taken into custody and placed in the back seat of the patrol vehicle.
While officers processed the stolen SUV, Ames allegedly escaped from the vehicle and ran Southbound across lanes of the freeway and into West Sacramento.
A perimeter was set up in the area of Industrial and Harbor Boulevards. The CHP enlisted the help of West Sacramento police, the Yolo County sheriff's deputies, and a CHP aircraft and was able to recapture Ames around 9 p.m.
Ames was booked into jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, escaping arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle, and resisting arrest.
Authorities first reported that a CHP officer had been injured, but no law enforcement personnel nor Ames were injured during the incident.
