Officer Shoots Dog That Attacked Man Near Stockton City Hall

STOCKTON (CBS13) – Police say a series of dog attacks led to a pit bull being shot by an officer late Friday morning.

Joe Silva with the Stockton Police Department says that two pit bulls bit a man in the hand, then attacked another man near city hall. The dogs then started running around downtown.

The dogs then attacked and killed a cat before an animal control worker and a police officer cornered them.

As authorities closed in on the dogs, Silva says one of the pit bulls charged at an officer near the police department at Center and Washington Streets. The officer then shot the dog.

The animal control officer was able to corral the other pit bull.

The shot dog is at the vet; its condition is unclear. The second dog is in quarantine for at least ten days.

Silva says the man attacked by the dogs at city hall is expected to survive his injuries. The man bitten in the hand is said to have sought medical treatment on his own.

The owner of the dogs has come forward but is not being identified by authorities.
