Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves Suspect Dead In South Sacramento
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - An investigation is underway into an officer-involved shooting Sunday night in South Sacramento that left one suspect dead.
The shooting happened 9:13 p.m. Sunday in the 7500 block of 29th Street. Police officers received a call from a man who said someone was breaking into vehicles, breaking car windows, and was hiding in the backyard of a home, according to a statement from the Sacramento Police Department.
The caller gave police a description of the suspect, and when police arrived at the scene, they were guided by a sheriff's department helicopter to the spot he was believed to be hiding. Deputies inside the helicopter said the suspect picked up what looked like a crowbar, smashed a window on a nearby residence then ran to the front door of the residence where he stopped and looked inside of a vehicle.
When officers caught the suspect a few minutes later at the front of the residence, they ordered him to stop and show his hands but he ran from officers to the back of the home, according to police. He then reportedly turned towards officers, and, ignoring calls to stop, came at officers while holding something in front of them.
The officers fired their guns at the man, who then fell to the ground being hit multiple times by bullets. He was soon after pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect's name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
None of the two officers involved in the shooting were injured. They have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Because this incident falls under the City Council policy on Police Use of Force, video and audio from the incident will be released to the public within 30 days.
