Police: Stockton man pulled out replica rifle from pants when he was shot by officer

Officer-involved shooting closes streets in Stockton overnight

STOCKTON - A man was shot and killed by a Stockton police officer Monday night while brandishing a replica firearm that the officer believed was the real thing, police say.

According to the Stockton Police Department, at around 10 p.m. Monday, police responded to a call for service in the 1700 block of W. Fremont Street where someone had attempted to kick in the door of a building and then climbed in through a window. When officers arrived at the scene and confronted the suspect, he displayed what appeared to be a rifle in his pants and ran east on Fremont Street, police say.

Officers eventually found the suspect hiding behind a bridge pillar in the area of Pershing and Fremont. Police say he initially refused to comply with their orders. And when he finally did come out, walked past officers. When he was told to stop, the suspect pulled what appeared to be a firearm from his pants. An officer shot at the suspect, hitting him.

Officers remained at their vehicles until additional units could arrive and they could approach the suspect, say police. They then rendered aid to the man until an ambulance arrived and pronounced him dead.

The suspect's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. He's described as a Black male, 34 years old, and from Stockton. The officer has been identified as Marcos Alonso. He has been with the force since July 2021 and is assigned to Field Operations, police say. He has been placed on paid administrative leave.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call the Stockton Police Department at 209-937-8377.

The Stockton Police Department has initiated an investigation into the shooting with investigators from the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Bureau of Investigations, the California Department of Justice, and the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner's Office.
