Pedestrian struck and killed in North Highlands; DUI suspect arrested
NORTH HIGHLANDS – A DUI suspect was arrested after allegedly hitting and killing someone crossing the road in North Highlands late Monday night.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. near Elkhorn Boulevard and Butterball Way.
The CHP said a Corvette was traveling at a high rate of speed in the #1 lane when the car hit the pedestrian, killing them. Officers said a passenger in the vehicle was also taken to the hospital with "major injuries."
CHP says they did a field sobriety test of the driver, Ilya Shamailov, after the crash and arrested him.
It's unclear if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk when they were hit.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office has identified the pedestrian as 32-year-old Sacramento resident Jamel Tyrone Oliver.
