NCAA Suspends Syracuse Coach Boeheim For 9 Games
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) The NCAA has suspended Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim for nine games for academic, drug and gifts violations committed primarily by the men's basketball program.
The governing body said Friday the school will be on probation for five years. The team must vacate wins in which ineligible students participated.
The punishment also includes financial penalties and the reduction of three men's basketball scholarships a year for four years. Recruiting restrictions will be enforced for two years.
In anticipation of the report, Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud announced a postseason ban for this year for the men's basketball team. The NCAA accepted the ban, which means next year's recruits won't be affected.
