Modesto Woman, Mom Narrowly Escape Apartment Fire Through Bathroom Window

MODESTO (CBS13) — They thought they were going to die, but a Modesto woman and her mother got out of a burning building alive with quite a story to tell.

Tammy Dobbins and her mother say they tried to run out of their apartment, but quickly got trapped by the flames.

They were trapped in the bathroom as their apartment went up in flames.

"She turned around and a big ball of fire just came burling in at us," Tammy said.

The small bathroom window was their only hope.

"I was on the phone with 911. my mom was yelling out the window for help," Tammy said.

Between Dobbins and her mom, it was a fight to stay alive.

"Smoke was coming through the door. and i put everything on the floor," Tammy said. "My mom turned the shower on."

Someone eventually rolled a dumpster up against the building, and they were going to jump. That's when firefighters arrived. They brought the women down the ladder one by one.

"I'm just glad for my mom. For me, my moms all I have," Tammy said.

Her mom doesn't have much strength. She was recently in a car wreck and suffers from lung disease. The studio apartment in Modesto was all they had left.

"All the things we had on our backs. All we had left. Can you believe this?" she said.
