Modesto Hospital: Despite Nearly 100 Layoffs, More Medical Staff Will Be Added
MODESTO (CBS13) — Modesto's Memorial hospital is planning to lay off nearly 100 people by the end of April.
Hospital employees were told on Monday that dozens would be laid off and several others could have their hours reduced this spring.
Memorial Medical Center blames financial reasons for laying off 96 employees from staff at its hospital, offices and education center. The layoffs are for support positions such as food service, janitorial and security staff.
Businesses near the hospital's offices are worried about the hit they will take from the loss of potential regular customers from the hospital.
"They do come in here as customers and we do a lot of business there," said Mexicali Grill owner Ismael Perez. "Their luncheons, holidays, meetings. Yeah, I feel bad for the people who don't have jobs."
They worry how staff cuts will impact the city.
Memorial Medical Center said in a statement it's not cutting doctors or nurses, but is instead hiring more medical professionals.
