Modesto man, 22, arrested after suspected hit-and-run leaves pedestrian dead

MODESTO – A driver has been arrested after a suspected hit-and-run that left a person dead in Modesto late Sunday night.

California Highway Patrol said, a little after 9 p.m., officers responded to S. 9th Street, near Hatch Road, to investigate a reported collision. At the scene, an injured man was found lying in the road.

Medics soon pronounced the man dead, CHP said.

Officers had noticed a sedan parked near the pedestrian when they were getting to the scene. That sedan soon tried getting onto Highway 99, but officers pulled it over. Officers noted that the sedan had noticeable front-end damage.

The driver has been identified as 22-year-old Modesto resident Jasneal Hayer. He has been arrested under suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter.

Due to the investigation, S. 9th Street was closed in the area through the early morning hours.
