MLS Expansion Officially Awarded To Minnesota

The last month there had been reports that Sacramento will not be awarded the 23rd expansion of Major League Soccer. According to the league's website, it is now official.

On Wednesday, MLS Commissioner Don Garber made the official announcement with Minnesota United FC owner Dr. Bill McGuire. MLS is set to debut in Minnesota in 2018.

The expansion is the first MLS team in the upper Midwest. The league is reportedly had a desire to expand in this region of the country. Which may be the reason why Sacramento was not awarded the team.

There is still hope for the Sacramento Republic FC. The league has been growing rapidly in recent years. Less than a year ago, Atlanta was announced as an expansion team. LA was awarded a new team six months after that.

Miami is set to become 24th team in MLS. Though, the owners of the Miami team have not be able to secure a stadium deal. If Miami is unable to finalize a stadium, Sacramento could become the 24th team.

MLS has also shown interest in expanding the league to 25 teams. Either way, Sacramento is rumored to be next in line for a MLS team.
