Memorial Day A Chance To Help Veterans Who Have Fallen Through Cracks

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Memorial Day gave a chance to remember local military veterans who have fallen through the cracks.

California leads the nation in the number of homeless veterans, and many are in desperate need of health care.

It's as clear as the glasses one man was being fitted for—Memorial Day is also a day to honor and take care of military veterans still with us, who sometimes feel ignored.

"Memorial Day is a day we traditionally recognize those who have fallen, but many who have come back are still struggling with scars of service, whether it's psychologically injury of physical injury and homelessness," said Col. Darryl Hunter with the Air Force Reserves.

There are more homeless veterans in California than in any other state.

So on Monday at VFW Post 67 in Sacramento, the free health care exams and free glasses were a sight for sore eyes.

Fifty volunteers, doctors, nurses and support staff were proud to give back to make it easy for veterans who fought hard for our freedom.

"So we can provide a medical home just for the day where people can get a lot of different services and a lot of different things taken care of," said clinic co-manager Anrdrea Gero.

And taking care of veterans for many is their way of honoring fallen heroes and showing those who have fallen through the cracks that somebody still cares.
