Meadowview Residents Hold Peace Walk To Stop Cycle Of Violence
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Marchers chanted "Stop the violence, keep the peace" – a call to action to take their community back.
Dozens of people marched along Meadowiew and Amhurst Saturday with a common goal in mind: spread the love and stop the hate.
"There's just too many kids out here dying," said mother Deanna Locker.
Locker knows the pain all too well. Her 20-year-old son James Jackson was shot and killed while sitting inside a car outside a Sacramento shopping center last month.
"It's just been overwhelming these last few days. From the funeral to now, it's just been … the love has just been overwhelming," Locker said.
The peace walk was organized by A Better You, a local organization aimed at stomping out the cycle of violence one community at a time.
"His death will not be in vain. This will not just be a death that will be buried and never to be remembered again. This is a soul that is going to impact a community," said activist Michelle Irving.
As investigators continue to search for the gunman, Jackson's mother says her son's legacy will live on in the message she preaches.
"I hope they see the love out here and stop wanting to kill each other. It's crazy; kids killing more kids," Locker said.
Investigators say the motive behind the shooting is still unclear.
