Manteca Cracking Down On Lawns After 25 Percent Water Use Increase In Drought

MANTECA (CBS13) — Manteca will be making dramatic changes to save water during the drought as new numbers show the city has not only not conserved water in the past year, but used 25 percent more.

The fountain will stay dry at the library as part of the city's flood of new watchdog regulations.

Bob Hamilton put rocks in his front yard already.

"We hear all the talk, it's just somebody's got to drive it home to us maybe," he said.

The city will requiring all new front yards be 75 percent lawn-free as part of its 14-point drought plan. Also gone are charity car washes. The city will hire three new water enforcement officers to help enforce the rules.

The city is considering a building moratorium to help cut back on water use, but the city attorney is concerned the move could lead to lawsuits.
