Man shot, killed in backyard of Woodland home; primary suspect in custody

Homicide investigation in Woodland

WOODLAND – A primary suspect who police were looking for in the deadly shooting of a man in Woodland early Tuesday morning turned himself in, police said on Thursday.

Woodland police say officers responded to the scene along the 800 block of Ashley Avenue just after 1 a.m. Tuesday to investigate reports of shots fired. Neighbors also reported hearing gunshots coming from a home.

Officers soon found a man in his 30s in the backyard of a home; he had life-threatening gunshot wounds, police say. First aid was started immediately, but police say medics soon pronounced the man dead.

Police say two men, believed to be armed, ran from the scene and were last seen near Ferns Park. Officers, a K9, and a drone team searched the area. Later in the day, Woodland police announced that they had also served search warrants at two places in connection to the incident.

One person of interest was arrested, police say. That person, identified by Woodland police as 31-year-old Rigoberto Torres, allegedly gave the gun to the primary suspect -- now identified as 31-year-old Woodland resident Joseph Dyer.
