Man hurt in Natomas shooting; parked car and house also damaged, police say

South Natomas family rattled after gunfire damages their home

SACRAMENTO – Authorities are investigating after a shooting left one man hurt and some property damaged in south Natomas late Tuesday night.

A family was relaxing and watching TV in the safety of their home on Parody Way when they heard a commotion from the front yard.

They realized something was wrong when bullets started hitting the house.

"I thought they were fireworks, because, you know, the new year and everything," said homeowner Charlotte Garcia.

Sacramento police said someone opened fire in the area just before 11 p.m., hitting a man in the leg. The family said the man struck by a bullet was a family friend who was outside.

He has since been taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The homeowners say their property was damaged by gunfire, both their house and front fence. Five bullets hit the house, one making it inside hitting a filing cabinet. They found the shell casing in the house and that shell casing is now with police for evidence.

There were children in the house at the time of the shooting. No other injuries have been reported, however.

"She grabbed her baby and went to the ground," Garcia said of a mother with a baby in the house. "We were so afraid. In fact, my niece's two kids wanted to sleep with me because they were so scared."

Officers said a parked car was also damaged.

One neighbor who lives a block away said he wants more police presence in the neighborhood.

"I heard gunshots. I mean, not that many in a row, but we hear gunshots almost every night," Jeff Uhlenhop said.

Exactly what led up to the shooting is still under investigation. No suspect information has been released at this point.

"I'm just thankful it wasn't worse than what it could've been," Garcia said. "[The gunfire] could've hit anybody in the house."
