Man killed in shooting in Modesto car dealership parking lot

MODESTO – An arrest was made in connection to a deadly shooting in the parking lot of a Modesto car dealership overnight, police said Friday.

Around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police received a report of gunfire on McHenry Boulevard near Hintze Avenue. But when officers arrived, they said they didn't find any indications of a shooting and the caller was not cooperating.

Then around midnight, the person called back to report that someone had been shot.

This is when police said they found a man with at least one gunshot wound in the parking lot of Citi Auto Sales. He died at the scene and has been identified as Modesto resident Jose Valdez, 43.

Modesto police said detectives eventually identified Edward McCullen, 43, as the suspected shooter. McCullen was located just before 5 p.m. Friday in central Modesto and was taken into custody.

He faces homicide and weapons-related charges, police said.

At this time, it's unknown if either individual was associated with the business. The business owner responded and is cooperating with the investigation.
