Suspect in East Sacramento fatal shooting arraigned, does not enter plea

Accused East Sacramento shooter, Deasan Basser, Jr., in court Monday

SACRAMENTO - The man accused of shooting and killing a man in an affluent neighborhood of Sacramento last week had his first court appearance Monday.

Desean Basser Jr. was arraigned and did not enter a plea.

Last Thursday, Brasser Jr. allegedly robbed and shot Charles Starzynski outside of the Sutter Lawn Tennis Club. Starzynski had gone to the club -- just as he did each week -- to with friends and enjoy a cheeseburger.

Basser Jr. was later arrested following a SWAT standoff with police.

"It's pretty shocking, it's really incredibly sad, to have something this extreme happen, ending in a swat showdown," said Amber Elliott, Starzynski's niece.

At the time of the incident, Basser Jr. was out on bond for a felony case. Court documents say he willfully and unlawfully inflicted corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition on a former or current partner and vandalized her vehicle. His bail was set at $50,000 and was only required to post $5,000 to be released on bond.

[Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the suspect vandalized Starzynksi's vehicle.]
