Maintenance Work Sickens 13 Students In Manteca Classroom
MANTECA (CBS13) — Maintenance work sickened more than a dozen students in Manteca on Wednesday.
Fire officials say a maintenance worker had sprayed a rubber sealant on an HVAC unit at Joshua Cowell School and the smell went through a duct and into a classroom.
In all, 13 students between the ages of 12 and 14 reported having respiratory issues. Five of them were transported to a hospital while eight of them went home with their parents or guardians.
The scene has since cleared and the smell has dissipated.
Fire officials say none of the students vomited, but complained about being overpowered by the smell.
