Los Angeles Bars Worker Travel To North Carolina, Mississippi Over Laws
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says the city will stop doing business with North Carolina and Mississippi after the states approved legislation preventing anti-discrimination protections for gay, lesbian and transgender people.
He said Friday he will approve the City Council's resolution to ban workers from participating in any conventions or other business that requires city resources.
Garcetti said in a statement that he wants to keep the city's tax dollars "from supporting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity."
The North Carolina law directs transgender people to use public toilets corresponding to the sex listed on their birth certificate. It also excludes LGBT people from state anti-discrimination protections.
The Mississippi law allows businesses to refuse services to gays. The laws have led to boycotts from several states and cities.
