Nevada City Highway reopens after arrest of barricaded suspect

NEVADA CITY - Nevada City Highway has reopened after a barricaded suspect was arrested following hours of negotiations Wednesday afternoon, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office said.  

Deputies responded to a report that three men entered a home on the 12800 block of Nevada City Highway shortly after 8 a.m. 

Two of the three men reported to be trespassing exited to home when deputies arrived at the scene, deputies said.

Deputies said the one man who was still in the home refused to leave and made threats toward the victim and law enforcement. The man also said he was armed with a knife and would protect himself, deputies said. 

Nevada City Highway was closed as the suspect would not leave the home. The highway was closed from Banner Lava Cap Road to Ridge Road. 

After several hours, the barricaded suspect, identified as 54-year-old Jamal Walker of Grass Valley, agreed to leave the home and was detained at about 1:15 p.m., deputies said.

No other suspects were found in the home and no injuries were reported. Walker was booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility for criminal threats, trespassing, vandalism and resisting arrest. 

The Sheriff's Mobile Crisis Team, Special Enforcement Detail and Critical Incident Negotiations Team all responded to the scene. 

Utility companies were also called to the scene after authorities could smell gas at the scene. Deputies said there was not a gas leak related to this incident.
