Kelly: Kaepernick To Play On Thursday, Gabbert To Sit Out

SANTA CLARA (CBS13) - The 49ers are planning on playing Colin Kaepernick on Thursday's game against San Diego, head coach Chip Kelly said on Tuesday.

Kelly focused on football in Tuesday's press conference, downplaying the controversy surrounding Kaepernick's decision to sit down during the national anthem.

"It's his right as a citizen," Kelly said. "My dealing with Colin since April is when he's here, he's all about ball and he's been great with that."

Kelly would not comment on who would be starting Thursday's game at quarterback, noting that the team still has a couple of days of training to go through. He also noted that Kaepernick needs more field time after missing the first two preseason games due to recovering from injury.

When asked about who would make the regular season roster, Kelly noted that it would actually be 49ers general manager Trent Baalke who will make the final decisions.

Thursday's game will be held at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. Watch it live starting at 7 p.m. on CBS13.
