Judge Rejects Yolo County Sheriff's Concealed Weapons Policy
YOLO COUNTY (CBS13) — A federal judge ruled against the Yolo County Sheriff's concealed weapons permit policy, meaning he may have to loosen his grip on permits.
Yolo County Sheriff Ed Prieto didn't have a lot to say to CBS13 after the Ninth Circuit Federal Appeals Court ruled against him.
The policy required citizens to prove they face a threat of violence or robbery before they can get a concealed weapon permit.
Yolo Sportsman Association president Randall Kelley understands the sheriff's position, but says applicants should get an extensive background check and training.
"I think there should be some good training, or some in-depth training into the consequences of using a firearm, just like a police officer gets that training," he said.
The sheriff can still appeal, and is deciding his next course of action.
Those weighing in like fellow board member Lisle George, say the issue goes deeper than local concealed weapons policies.
"I think the federal judge was correct. I believe strongly in the Second Amendment," he said. "Very few permit holders commit crimes."
