Infant taken during South Sacramento robbery and carjacking found safely
SOUTH SACRAMENTO - A woman was carjacked in South Sacramento and her one-year-old was taken Thursday morning, authorities say.
Just before 6 a.m., a woman was using the ATM in the area of Stockton Boulevard and Lindale Avenue in South Sacramento when she was robbed at gunpoint, according to the Sacrament County Sheriff's Office. A still image of the incident, below, shows the incident. The thief took off with the woman's vehicle, but was apparently unaware that the victim's one-year-old child was still inside.
"Just short of murder as far as the resources we're pulling on this one," said the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Amar Gandhi.
Deputies say that, minutes later, the vehicle was found abandoned in the area of Florin Road and Fawn Way with the child unharmed inside. Law enforcement set up a perimeter in the area; however, the suspect remains at large.
Gandhi said everything from surveillance video, to DNA, to fingerprints will be reviewed as part of this case to identify and arrest the suspect.
The attacker is described as either a White or Hispanic male, wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket. Detectives obtained surveillance footage and released a still shot from the video. They're asking for the public's help identifying the man.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at (916) 874-5115 or the Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357).
