Vegetation fire burns home, forces evacuations in Solano County

Home destroyed by fire in Solano County

VACAVILLE - A fire in rural Vacaville burned one home and threatened other before crews knocked down the flames Monday evening.

The Dixon Fire Department told CBS13 on scene it's believed the fire started with a vehicle catching fire in a field, spreading to surrounding vegetation, then engulfing one home at 7395 N Meridian Rd. around 6 p.m.

The Solano County Sheriff's Office says some neighbors living nearby were told to evacuate for a time.

The fast response by fire crews region-wide came as a comfort to neighbors like Kristen Garrison, who called the scene a scare.

"I saw smoke and then maybe 3, 4 minutes later you could see the fence line go up. Then the trees went up," said Garrison, who called 911 after seeing the smoke. Crews arrived just minutes later.

Neighbors say it's a picture of fire season with dry grass fueling the spread, worried their homes could be next.

"It's a little too close for comfort. Especially with the grass being so dry and the trees being so dry," said Garrison.

It's why neighbors could be seen with hose in hand, watering down dry, overgrown brush in neighboring front yards.

"We're just trying to get it wet so if an ember does fall the moisture will put it out," said Rick Cintas, helping Garrison water the front of her property that faces the fire.

"It's what we do around Vacaville. Vacaville is a tight community, everybody helps out when we can," said Cintas.

Crews have not confirmed yet if the home was a total loss, but did tell CBS13 everyone made it out safely with no injuries.

Investigators are still working to figure out exactly what caused that vehicle to catch fire, sparking those fast moving flames.
