Honey Oil Lab Blamed For Explosion At West Sacramento Motel
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - An explosion in a West Sacramento motel room sent two people the hospital.
It happened Sunday at about 6:15 p.m. at the Stardust Motel in the 1400 block of West Capitol Avenue.
"It smelt like burnt rubber and glass everywhere," said Carmen Baldwin. "It was scary."
Only a wall separates Baldwin's room from where the blast happened.
"My first thought was to get the dogs out because if there was a fire, I didn't want them to burn to death," said Baldwin.
"Like a firework kind of sound," said another person staying nearby. "I came out and there is glass everywhere, like all the way to the middle of the parking lot."
"Suddenly something [exploded] inside," said Stardust manager Bhavin Patel. "The window was flying out."
Two men and a woman were inside when the explosion happened. The men suffered severe burns.
"They were burned on the skin and the face a little bit," said Patel.
Police say a honey oil lab is to blame.
"It's an unstable process and long story short, it can create an explosion," said Sgt. Roger Kinney with the West Sacramento Police Department.
Honey oil, or hashish oil, is the process of extracting THC - the main ingredient from marijuana - then smoking it to get high.
"It is something that is very, very dangerous," said Kinney.
Sgt. Kinney says they've seen an increase of honey oil use in the region. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, a majority of marijuana extraction labs are in California.
