Half Marathon Canceled After Union Pacific Denies Safe Passage Over Tracks
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The women's fitness festival is happening this weekend without one popular race. The half marathon was canceled after Union Pacific railroad denied organizers safe passage over its tracks.
The Sacramento Running Association, which organizes different events, including the California International Marathon (CIM), says the railroad has new policies after incidents with other events around the country.
Organizers have rerouted other runs to avoid the tracks, but there's no getting around them for the CIM.
"I think there's an importance to having that and Union Pacific recognizes this is an important event to our city. And that's very different than how maybe they're gonna evaluate smaller events," said Sacramento Running Association Executive Director Scott Abbott.
A Union Pacific spokesperson tells CBS13 they weigh each safe-passage request on a case-by-case basis and it's giving the CIM serious consideration.
