Global Winter Wonderland Brings Colorful Holiday Display To Cal Expo

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A new colorful winter display is under construction at Cal Expo for the holidays.

Starting on Nov. 22, Global Winter Wonderland will nix your need to book a trip to England, Italy or Easter Island this holiday season.

The colorful display is visible from Business 80 to drivers passing by Cal Expo.

"It has all of the world icons, so the Taj Mahal, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the London Bridge," said spokeswoman Liz Thomas. "And so it highlights all of the cultures around the world."

The exhibit is in its fourth year. After spending two years in Santa Clara and one in Atlanta, the creator, Lulu Huang, chose Sacramento for 2014.

"Because of the diversity of Sacramento, Lulu thought that this would be a great location this year," Thomas said.

Workers are brought over from China, and for five weeks, they build the unique lantern structures and cover them with silk.

"It's all LED, all energy-efficient. everything that they use is from recycled materials," Thomas said.

And what would a Winter Wonderland be without a visit from Kris Kringle?

"Santa is here, so kids can come, have fun if you're looking for that holiday shot," she said.

The Global Winter Wonderland runs from Nov. 22 to Jan. 4. For more information on tickets and hours, click here.
