Firefighters Stop Fire At Modesto-Area Warehouse Full Of Walnuts And Fireworks

MODESTO (CBS13) – Firefighters were able to stop a fire at a Modesto warehouse before it could reach a stash of fireworks.

The fire was first reported just after noon Sunday at a large warehouse along the 2300 block of Tenaya Street.

According to the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District, firefighters showed up and spotted smoke billowing from the warehouse's roof. Once inside, they found that some large bins of ground-up walnut hulls were on fire.

However, firefighters also learned that there was a store of fireworks on the other side of the building.

Thankfully, a firewall separated the walnuts and the fireworks, and the building's automatic sprinkler system helped knock down some of the flames. After some more work by firefighters, the fire was kept safely away from the fireworks.

"I am very pleased that the crews were able to keep the fire contained to the area where the walnut hulls were being stored. These firefighters are working very hard on a warm day and will probably be here for several more hours," said SCFPD Chief Randall Bradley in a statement.

No one has been hurt in the firefight. It is unclear what sparked the fire.
