Firefighter sustains minor burns battling Arden Arcade house fire

Firefighter injured battling house fire in Arden Arcade

SACRAMENTO - A Sacramento Metro firefighter sustained minor burns after thick smoke made for a difficult firefight in Arden Arcade on Saturday.

Sacramento Metro responded to a fire on Morris Way around noon and found a home with smoke and fire showing. A homeowner made it out but their pet wasn't as lucky.

Firefighters rushed to a home in Arden Arcade which turned into an aggressive firefight to keep flames from spreading to other homes.

"We had approximately five engines, three trucks, two battalion chiefs and multiple medic units," said Metro Fire Captian Andrew Whaley.

Sac Metro Fire posted a video, showing just how thick the smoke was pouring out of a home on Morris Way. All that smoke made it a tricky scene for crews.

"The crews did experience high heat and low visibility upon fire attack. While battling the fire, we did have one injury," Whaley said.

That injury was a firefighter with minor burns while a person who was inside was left gasping for air, needing treatment for smoke inhalation. Their cat didn't make it out alive.

At one point crews had to cut open the roof just to release some of that smoke and get air circulating.

"On the inside, there were multiple crews. We had multiple hose lines going in as well as crews inside searching," Whaley said.

Three rooms were wiped out by flames while the rest of the house was damaged by smoke in a chaotic scene that could've been worse if not for the fast fight to put out the flames before they spread.

That firefighter was taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK.

Fire investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started.
