Fire Rips Through South Sacramento Duplex, 9 People Displaced

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Nine people and several pets have to find a new place to live after a fire ripped through their duplex early Wednesday morning.

The scene was on the 4800 block of Del Norte Boulevard. Crews were called to scene just after 4 a.m.

A working smoke detector in the front of the unit helped one family quickly get to safety. The other family noticed a hole in the wall and saw smoke coming from the laundry room. They took out a hose and started splaying water on the fire as crews arrived.

Two dogs and a cat were displaced in the fire. One of the dogs had to be rescued by firefighters.

DOG RESCUE: Helmet Cam footage from an early morning house fire today shows two perspectives on Truck Company operations. Upon arrival at a working house fire, the four-person truck company splits in half. The Saw firefighter and the Apparatus Operator ladder the building and go to the roof to provide vertical ventilation, cutting a hole in the roof to allow smoke and hot gasses to escape. The Tools firefighter and the Captain go inside the home to search for victims and help locate the seat of the fire. In this video, footage from helmet cameras from both the Saw and Tools firefighters from Truck 6 are interspersed to show these operations, culminating with the rescue of a dog from her hiding place in a back bedroom. The occupants of the home all got out safely, due to a working smoke detector, and the dog was reunited with her happy owner on the sidewalk outside.

Firefighters faced numerous challenges and will have to pull part of the ceiling down to get into the walls and see how far the fire spread.

It is still unclear if the home is salvageable and the cause is still under investigation.
