FBI Dogs Finds Possible Remains Of Kristin Smart On Cal Poly Campus

There is new hope for answers in the murder mystery of Stockton native Kristin Smart. Smart disappeared on her Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus two decades ago and now the search there is back on.

Crews are digging up parts of the campus where FBI canines identified possible remains.

San Luis Obispo Sheriff Ian Parkinson spoke about the new search.

"We are hopeful that this will lead to the finding of Kristin or evidence that will bring closure to her family and ultimately to the community," said Parkinson.

A total of three locations will be excavated. Parkinson would not say where the others are.

Dennis Mahon, the founder of a website seeking justice for Kristine Smart, says he exchanged text messages with Smart's mom, Denise, following the announcement. He says the family is not raising their hopes Smart's body will be discovered.

"They're in a wait-and-see thing. Denise texted me today saying her hopes are not that high," Dennis Mahon said. "We'll see what happens because it's going to play out the next four days." .

The Smart family has publicly said they believe Paul Flores, who was the last to see Kristin Smart alive, knows more about her disappearance.

In civil depositions he has not cooperated giving answers.
