Fallen Marine Memorialized At Roseville Park With Tree Grove

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) – In one section of Roseville's Veterans Memorial Park, there is a tree grove. Each tree planted is in memory of a loved one in the military.

"This park, it's called the Veterans Memorial Park in Roseville and it's dedicated for local veterans and those who have given their life," said Vivienne Yamamoto from Sacramento Blue Star Moms.

Saturday, the Singh Family got to pay tribute to U.S. Marine Corporal Gurpreet Singh, who died three years ago at age 21.

After emigrating from Punjab, Singh grew up in Antelope, attended Roseville's Oakmont High School then joined the Marines. He died in combat in Afghanistan.

A tree is planted at this park in his memory.

"I think more than the tree, I think he would be happy to see everybody get together and just remembering him because I know he wouldn't want us to forget what he was fighting for," said Manpreet Kaur, Corp. Singh's sister.

He was a son.

"It's good so somebody can look at and remember him," said Nirmal Singh, Corp. Singh's father.

He was a brother.

"We can come here as a family. On his birthday or memorial and just remember him and all the veterans," Manpreet said.

He was a soldier.

"This would be a park for not just his family, but in support of the military to come and honor not just him but also others who have given their lives," Yamamoto said.

Singh's family tried to get a bench dedicated at the Capitol right after his death. When that didn't happen, that's when they began to work on the memorial in Roseville.

A brick dedication at Veteran's Memorial Park will be held on Nov. 10.
