Fairfield Closing Parks Over Holiday Weekend Due To Fire Fears
FAIRFIELD (CBS13) — Fairfield is closing three popular parks for the holiday weekend after issuing a red flag warning over dangerous fire conditions.
Hikers and bikers coming to Rockville Hills Regional Park and two others might be disappointed this weekend to find them closed. But city officials say with dry conditions and wind, it's a precaution they must take.
Starting Friday night, the three parks will be off-limits to everyone this holiday weekend.
The city has issued a red flag warning, prompting the parks to close.
"We've had fires due to fireworks in the open spaces in the past," said deputy fire chief Jorge Meridio.
Unlike some neighboring cities, it is illegal to set off any fireworks in Fairfield. But officials say every year it's done and the area's strong wind adds to the danger.
"The typical winds here are gusting sometimes over 30 mph," he said.
While some mountain bikers are disappointed in the closures, most recognize the possibility of a fire in these parks on a 4th of July weekend.
