Tanker At Facility In Tracy Catches Fire

TRACY (CBS13) - Crews are responding to a hazardous material incident in the Tracy area after an experiment apparently went wrong.

The incident happened at SRI International. Alameda County Fire says they received a call at 7:18 p.m. about a Hazmat situation at the facility in Tracy. An experiment involving Divinylbenzene was taking place when something went wrong and the tanker it was in caught fire, Alameda County Fire says.

From there, the hillside also caught fire.

Alameda County Fire crews are responding to the scene to assist. Crews are being warned of inhalation risks due to the chemical.

An SRI International spokesman says the storage tank of Divinylbenzene was "off-gassing" in a temporary wood structure when, for an unknown reason, a controlled flame involved in the process managed to catch the structure on fire.

The chemical is a likely contributing factor to the fire, the spokesman says.

SRI International says the area is in an isolated location and there doesn't appear to be any health risk to the public.

More information to come.
