Two People Chased During Violent Road Rage Incident Arrested

ESCALON (CBS13) - A road rage incident in San Joaquin County over the weekend resulted in shots fired between suspects and all three involved being detained.

On Sunday at 3:30 p.m., two cars were reportedly chasing each other in Escalon when people in one of the cars started shooting at a Ford Explorer that was reportedly following them.

"This guy was not only erratic, but he pulled out a gun and actually fired at the person following him," explained San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office spokesperson, Sandra Mendez.

A witness told CBS13 he heard two to three shots fired from one of the vehicles near his home at Henry and E River Road.

The chase ended more than three miles away when both vehicles crashed into two parked cars at River and McHenry roads, according to a San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office statement.

"It not only affects the people in the vehicle but it affects everyone around there. Somebody minding their own business could be taken out without realizing what just happened. People are basically driven by their emotions when they are in this type of situation, so it's a not safe situation all the way around," Mendez explained.

Mendez said she does not know what started the argument. She is warning others who may find themselves in a road rage situation to not react.

"Stay focused, don't make eye contact, try to follow the rules of the road but don't engage them. It's not worth it. I mean, your life is worth so much more than that," she said.

All three people involved were detained by deputies. After their investigation, deputies arrested Sergio Carranza and Yaeko Payne. They were in the vehicle from which shots were fired.

Investigators found a loaded gun nearby that they say belonged to Carranza. Carranza and Payne were booked into the San Joaquin County Jail for outstanding warrants as well as several new felony charges, including attempted murder.

The driver of the Ford Escape was released and is not facing any charges.
