OLIVEHURST — A man was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison for driving drunk and killing a Yuba County high school football coach in a collision earlier this year, prosecutors said Friday.

The Yuba County District Attorney's Office said Larry Lee Anderson, Jr., 50, of Plumas Lake, had pleaded guilty last month to murder, DUI and hit-and-run charges. He also had three previous DUI convictions.

On February 26, 2024, Anderson was driving faster than 100 miles per hour when he tried to pass between two vehicles along Feather River Boulevard, prosecutors said. Shane Bunn, who coached football at Lindhurst High School in Olivehurst was driving one of those two vehicles.

Anderson first clipped the other vehicle before careening into the back of Bunn's vehicle, sending it into an irrigation canal. Bunn, 34, died instantly, prosecutors said.

Anderson then swerved and struck a third vehicle before his vehicle came to a stop in an orchard along the roadway. According to the district attorney's office, law enforcement officials found him hiding hours later.

A blood test at a hospital revealed Anderson's blood alcohol content was double the legal limit.
