Driver Veers Off, Kills California Highway Worker

REDWOOD CITY (AP) - Authorities in Northern California say a driver veered off a highway and struck members of a work crew, killing one person and injuring another.

California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel says the driver was heading south on U.S. Highway 101 in Redwood City around 11 a.m. Tuesday when she went off the road toward a nine-person crew working along the shoulder and hit two workers.

Authorities say one of the workers was pronounced dead at the scene. Another worker was transported to a local hospital after suffering minor injuries.

The driver was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Montiel says one of the southbound lanes near where the accident occurred was closed but was expected to reopen sometime Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
