Dixon Mourns Teen Shot And Killed At Park; 16-Year-Old Suspect Arrested

DIXON (CBS13) – Dixon's first homicide in seven years brought out a massive crowd to remember the teenager shot and killed.

Many showed up to Sunday night's vigil for 17-year-old Charlie Moore Jr. But there's a huge effort to raise money for Charlie's family, who are struggling to deal with his death.

Charlie's uncle says his nephew was the ideal kid.

"Raised really good, good morals, loved his family," uncle Daniel Hernandez said.

Popular and friendly, Charlie was loved by many in his small community. And that was obvious at Sunday night's vigil, as more than 200 people came to honor the teenager shot two days earlier at Northwest Park.

The crime scene turned into a community scene.

"There will be justice for Charlie," said Chief of Police Jon E. Cox.

Dixon's Chief of Police was among those who stood with Charlie's family and friends.

"He always made people laugh and had a good vibe, you know?" said friend Jesus Rodriguez.

Hernandez says the outpouring has helped the family, who are still shocked by what happened on Friday.

Police say two groups got into a fight, Charlie was shot, and the 16-year-old suspect fled – only to be arrested in Vacaville later.

"Put our hands behind our back and trust in the law to get him and they did," Hernandez said.

As the 17-year-old's relatives prepare to lay him to rest, even strangers are pitching in to help, contributing more than $5,600 to a GoFundMe account for funeral expenses as of Sunday night.

Charlie was a junior at Maine Prairie High School in Dixon. The superintendent, who came to Sunday's vigil, says there will be grief counselors at school tomorrow and that the school will be talking about Charlie.
